IMMUNE RESPONSE TO INFECTION
Prof. Dr. Önder Ergönül is a physician and researcher specializing in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology. He is the Head of the Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Department at Koç University School of Medicine and the founding director of the Koç University Isbank Center for Infectious Diseases (KUISCID).
After graduating from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1989, he completed his residency at Ankara University in 1996 and earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard University in 2003. Between 2000-2002, he worked as a research fellow in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is a full member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, he previously served as the president of the Turkish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (KLİMİK) from 2013 to 2017. Since 2018, he has been a board member of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
His research focuses on emerging infectious diseases, epidemiology, and antimicrobial resistance. He has made significant contributions to the study of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, bacterial and viral infections, and the impact of antimicrobial stewardship. He has led several national and international research projects and collaborates with global institutions to advance infectious disease control strategies.
